Currently, baby incubators in Uganda are too expensive and limited, impacting the lives of many families living in rural areas with sick babies. Our team was asked to create a $150 baby incubator that could monitor and control the baby’s temperature and also safely carry the baby 1-3 hours on a stretcher in an ambulance, made with locally available materials in Uganda.
We decided on an incubator with a laser-cut wooden body and an acrylic viewing window. I was in charge of the electrical system that consisted of a temperature sensor feeding live data from the baby’s skin to the Arduino, which then turned the heat lamp on/off through a relay and also displayed the live temperature on an LCD screen.
