This project’s goal was to design and make an autonomous drone that could fly from one location to another, given a set of GPS coordinates through what3words (a geocode system to identify any 3-meter square location on Earth). Once there, it would identify any potential accidents using its attached Arducam and YOLOv5, reporting to emergency services with live-feedback data and video as it flies around the identified accident site.
My assignment was to develop the physical drone and make sure that it can autonomously fly from one location to another at a given height, given a set of GPS coordinates. After plenty of rebuilding due to crashes and broken propellers during testing, I was able to assemble and program the drone to fly via both RC control and autonomous control, and land within 5 meters of the assigned destination. I used the Raspberry Pi and Pixhawk to control, track, and test the drone through ArduPilot Mission Planner software.
